Family Focused Night Hikes

Families with elementary and middle school-aged children can participate in Family Focused Night Hikes. Rangers will guide families through nocturnal landscapes, educating them about animal adaptations and the wonders of the night sky. Reservations are required for this program.

Because of changing snow conditions, the hike location will be decided a few days before the program. Rangers will call all registered participants the day before the program to confirm location information and site conditions.

The hike will last 1 to 1.5 hours and might involve some hilly and uneven ground, covering between half a mile to a full mile. Rangers will call you the night before the hike for confirmation of the hike’s location and for a trails condition update. If there is enough snow, this hike will become a snowshoe hike. You can bring your own or borrow a pair from the park.

Please remember to wear sturdy footwear, warm clothes, and bring a red-colored light or headlamp for added safety.  If you do not have a red colored light, we will provide red cellophane to cover your light.

Reservations are required whether participants borrow snowshoes from the National Lakeshore or have their own. To cancel a reservation, please call the National Lakeshore so visitors on the waiting list can be contacted to participate in the hike. Please call 231-326-4700, extension 5005, for details and to make reservations.
